Poor oral health – not brushing or flossing regularly – is unlikely to be the leading cause of heart disease. But poor oral health in combination with other risk factors can contribute to heart disease.

Bacteria on the teeth and gums may travel through your bloodstream and attach to fatty plaques in arteries (atherosclerosis), so the patches are most swollen (inflamed). If one of the explosions of the plates and causes a blood clots to form, you can have a heart attack or stroke.

It is possible that inflammation of the gums leads to swelling in other parts of your body, including arteries. This inflammation can also contribute to heart disease.

Regardless if you have heart disease, it is important to take care of your teeth and gums. Steps for good oral hygiene:

Brush your teeth at least twice a day
Floss every day
Replace your toothbrush at least every three months
